Special Kind of Vibe – Mele Coloma

The Spirit of Aloha

The word “aloha” is the most recognized of all Hawaiian words. In its simplest use, it means “hello”, “welcome”, or “goodbye”. But the word, to many Hawaiians, can also be used to convey a much deeper and richer feeling, one that encapsulates a way of living, being, and most of all, treating others. This Spirit of Aloha inspires us to do what we do and influences every facet of every tour we offer at Polynesian Adventure Activities.

We wanted to delve further into this particular meaning of Aloha, so we asked Mele Coloma, what the Spirit of Aloha means to them, as well as some of their favorite things on the Islands of Hawai’i.

Hi, Mele! What is your role & how long have you been here with us at Poly Ad?
I work in Charters and I’ve been with Poly Ad for just over 14 years.

What is your favorite thing about Hawai’i?
The ocean & the weather. Perfect for fishing, diving, swimming & of course… watersports! Surfing, Stand-up Paddleboarding, paddling, coiling & more! There are very few places in the world these activities can be done year-round (w/out a wet-suit), & Hawai’i is one of the few special places where you can.

What does the Spirit of Aloha mean to you?

The Aloha Spirit is a special kind of vibe you can only feel in Hawai’i. It stems from our culture, the way we were raised & the way we raise our children. When visitors come to Hawai’i, they are treated like Family. We openly give hugs & kisses – & we really mean it nothing fake about it, it’s not forced – it’s just our way of welcoming, its a part of what makes us, US.

What is your favorite ‘off the beaten path’ place to enojoy?
I most certainly will not divulge my secret beach or hiking spots haha, don’t want them being inundated. However… my fave place to just hang out & have a few would probably be Kona Brewing Co.

What is your favorite local food?
Poke bowl from Foodland, Pupukea. Let me repeat! It’s not all Foodlands – it has to be from Foodland, PUPUKEA or Whaler’s in Haleiwa. They’re pretty good too!
