Created thousands of years ago by lava tubes heading towards the ocean, the Halona Blowhole is one of Hawai’i’s natural wonders and top scenic destinations.
The blowhole can be found on the island of Oahu in an area known as Halona Cove, where many famous movies have been shot. Halona Cove was the setting for the famous movie scene where Burt Lancaster and his co-star Deborah Kerr kissed and rolled in the surf in a pivotal moment during the 1953 Academy Award-winning film From Here to Eternity. Halona Cove was also the setting for the Fountain of Youth scene in 2011’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
Timing the eruption of the blowhole for the perfect picture can be a little tricky but is worthwhile to those that wait. A tip from those in the know say the best way to capture a picture of the Halona Blowhole is to listen for a deep humming sound beneath the rocks as the ocean tide rushes in. But make sure to stand back and keep your camera dry as the blowhole is capable of shooting a geyser of water over thirty feet high into the air!
Often noted as one of the most scenic areas along the coast, the drive to the Halona Blowhole is just 20 minutes from Waikiki and takes you past famed Hanauma Bay as well as Koko Head Crater.
