Sunset Beach

Sunset Beach is located on the North Shore of Oahu in the islands of Hawaii. The original Hawaiian name for this place was Paumalu. Sunset is known for its big wave surfing during the winter months. The Quicksilver Invitational in memory of Eddie Aikau was started in the area in 1984. Sunset Beach was home to the Duke Kahanamoku Invitational surfing competition until 1985, and is home to the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing which is a part of the prestigious World Cup of Surfing.

Like most of the beaches on Oahu's North Shore, Sunset can be considered dangerous for inexperienced surfers due in part to the extensive coral formations near the surface. Generally speaking the area is flat like a lake during the summer months and has impressive waves during the winter months. The surfing competitions take place usually between December and January as these present the best opportunity for the biggest and best waves for surfing.
