Home>Waimea Canyon
Over 100 years ago, Samuel Clemens, famously known as Mark Twain, first viewed the Waimea Canyon and nicknamed it the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific." Waimea Canyon is the largest canyon in the Pacific and truly a dramatic sight to behold. The canyon measures 10 miles long, 1 mile wide, and more than 3,500-feet deep. It was carved thousands of years ago by rivers and floods that flowed from Mount Waialeale's summit. Mt. Wai`ale`ale receives an average of 440 inches of rain a year, making it the wettest spot on earth. The lines in the canyon walls depict different volcanic eruptions and lava flows that have occurred over the centuries. Even though it is smaller than the Grand Canyon of Arizona, Waimea Canyon rivals it's beauty. Numerous lookouts and hikes offer terrific views of every aspect of this natural wonder. The canyon is located in Koke'e State Park which encompasses 4,345 acres of land and has 45 miles of trails that run through the canyon and the nearby Alakai Swamp. The Ranger's Station is located near the Koke'e Museum and provides hiking maps of the area. The elevation makes the air 10-15 degrees cooler than in the valley and by afternoon many areas are often shrouded in clouds. You can visit Waimea Canyon with Polynesian Adventure Tours from Kauai or Oahu. All tours reserved on this site are discounted 10%. That is the best price we offer!
